Life in the Sudan
Written by Sis. Captain Bayyinah Sharrieff (Hamzah)
Our beloved Sister, Captain Bayyinah Sharrieff Hamzah, is one of our Nation's greatest unsung heroes. We became familiar with her through her informative series of articles in the Muhammad Speaks Newspaper. Her vivid stories of learning how to live peacefully within the Islamic society of The Sudan captivated us. Yet, Sister Captain Bayyinah Sharrieff Hamzah's biggest claim to fame may be the unyielding grace, devotion, and upright character she displayed after the Nation of Islam's coup of 1975. Helping her husband to face the many trials and dangers that developed, they led the one (known) temple which did not betray the Messenger of Allah. Participating in the Islamic culture of the Sudan helped prepare and qualify her to assist the Honorable Elijah Muhammad in molding the M.G.T. into the most beautiful Nation on Earth. Although she seems to prefer to keep a low profile nowadays, Captain Bayyinah Sharrieff Hamzah's articles (found below) are still guiding us to the straight path. All Praises are due to Allah.

"The time may be now upon us that he takes us out and put us among the Orthodox Muslims because of the time. Let him who is righteous be right or wrong. The judgement can take place anytime now. Let him be righteous and let him be in righteousness for He, Allah, came quickly. No man knows when He (Allah) will come.” Dear Holy Apostle pages 49-50.

"When you go to Asia, you hardly see a woman in the Mosque at all. They have a certain quarters but you do not see any women and men going in and out like here (America). When a woman goes to the Mosque, she goes in another area (there is a little balcony there a screened partition so you cannot see her). They just naturally do not believe in mixing men and women.
Some of us are so given to sitting down staring at each other (gazing into each others eyes), you cannot get away in that part of the world with this kind of conduct. We have to learn here, because they will not accept you there like that, therefore, I am teaching you here and the Holy Qur’an teaches like this… Since you see that it affects your heart, do not gaze at it. Lower your gaze, look at something else, because this is affecting you… And then, if you cannot (control yourself), then the Book tells you that this one has a disease in the heart. Some attractive person comes in the room; they can hardly take their eyes off of them. They cannot expect to go anyplace. Just that alone will get them death in some places. So, why take a person somewhere else where they will die? Leave them." Dear Holy Apostle page 52 |

"I’m wondering now who will be able to represent the Nation of Islam to be able to get into the society of that people. There is much we all have to learn to do and practice but to get into their society, you have to have a certain respect for that society or else you will never get into it. And, there is no one sign they watch for. When the nice looking beautiful men pass by, they glance at you, Sister, to see if you are looking at them.” Dear Holy Apostle pages 52-53.
