Malcolm's Defection

“He even told Jerry Williams that the next time he went for a pilgrimage, he hoped to take (Jerry Williams) with him to Mecca.  That night, he told Jerry Williams that he was doing everything he could and was to trying to bring me into court and make me say that I was the father of Lucille and Evelyn’s children.

He went back to these girls who used to date him before he married his present wife, Betty. He made several trips to Chicago and made many phone calls to Evelyn.  He finally persuaded her to agree with him.  He tried to get others on his side by calling them, but they refused to go into court for him-to disgrace me after I had worked for 33 years trying to bring the knowledge of Islam and of the God Allah to the 22 million black people here in America.”

Brief transcription of a portion of the 1964 Laborer's Meeting addressing the false allegations against the Honorable Elijah Muhammad:
"As I told Brother Benjamin just a while ago and he been knowing me ever since 35. I didn't get no letter in the office that he knew me. See this is the thing that. That's right! He knows my... If any man know my moral character that man and his wife knows! Because I was a young man in those days. He used to see women trying to get after me. He used to see me get after them and make them better.
Never would fall for them, for that kind of stuff. All right, for long time seven years up and down that coastline. Right. My wife use to come and visit me sometime at his house. I couldn't come out here to visit her because they would kill me, in those days. All right, now the enemy that was after me in those days is dead. Allah told me the way he died. He told me you can go back there and I will be with you. And so he's dead."

1964 Malcolm travels around the would and tries to discredit the Messenger. Our Brother Abdul Basit Naeem explains his observations from the international community.

Malcolm's Apology
"Malcolm was not no friend to you, he double crossed you.  He double crossed himself. Therefore Allah didn't double cross him.  He give him what the Holy Qur'an teach you He would give him, and the history teach you the same. The man didn't die a just and righteous Muslim, he was a wicked hypocrite." - Messenger of Allah (Saviour's Day 1968)

Betty's Death
Malcolm L. Shabazz Death

Many of those who falsely accused the Honorable Elijah Muhammad of adultery, polygamy, and/or an interest in young girls have actually committed these acts themselves. This includes several of his former ministers and his own son, Wallace.

  • November 22, 1963 - President Kennedy is assassinated. All laborers are instructed to remain silent about the President's death.
  • Late November, 1963 - The Honorable Elijah Muhammad is scheduled to speak in New York on December 1, but cancels out of respect for the mourning of the country (including Black people). Malcolm requests to speak in his absence. Malcolm is given permission with the stipulation that he does not comment on President Kennedy's assassination.
  • December 1, 1963 - Malcolm defies orders by speaking on the assassination of Kennedy. Because he is the National Representative of the Nation of Islam, his sentiments are taken as the official statement for the entire Nation of Islam, endangering its members across the country especially those imprisoned.
  • December 2, 1963 - Malcolm learns he is silenced for 90 days because of his disobedience, but maintains his title of Minister, his residence, his car, and his salary. He gives a quote to a reporter despite his silencing.
  • December 4, 1963 - Malcolm defies his silencing by giving a quote to the press, stating that he agrees with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's decision.
  • Early December, 1963 - Malcolm's silencing becomes "indefinite", and he speaks to the press again in willful defiance of his silencing. He again defends his silencing, but refuses to be silent.
  • February 25, 1964 - Muhammad Ali beats Sonny Liston. Malcolm again speaks to the press within his period of silence.
  • March 2, 1964 - Tentative end of period of Malcolm's silence, if he met the condition to remain silent in the public during the previous 90 days.
  • Early March, 1964 - Malcolm speaks with press about his silencing which has not been lifted yet; he had not remained silent as ordered.
  • Early March, 1964 - Malcolm gives another quote in defiance of his "silencing".
  • March 8, 1964 - Malcolm chooses to resign from his post and leave the Nation of Islam instead of submitting to being temporarily silenced with pay. He claims he will spread "Mr. Muhammad's message" outside of the Nation of Islam.
  • March 12, 1964 - Malcolm's Declaration of Independence. He says Mr. Muhammad’s analysis of the problem is the most realistic, and that his solution is the best one. Nevertheless, he sets up a group in opposition to the Nation of Islam and begins promoting "rifle clubs".
  • March 31 , 1964 - Nation begins eviction proceedings after Malcolm resigns his post but refuses to vacate the Nation's New York residence.
  • April 1964 - Malcolm goes to Hajj, leaving his family behind in the U.S. amidst alleged death threats.
  • May 21, 1964 - Malcolm returns from Mecca.
  • Mid June, 1964 - Malcolm goes to court to fight eviction from the Nation's New York residence, begins to defame the character of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad, and his followers attempt an attack of the Muslims of Mosque #7 in Harlem.
  • June 28 - The Messenger speaks in New York City (369 Armory lecture, available on "audio" page).
  • July 1964 - Malcolm again travels internationally for several months, escaping growing tension and alleged death threats, leaving his family behind.
  • Early September, 1964 - Malcolm doesn't appear in court. The court evicts Malcolm from the Nation of Islam's New York residence, but suspends action until January, 1965.
  • Late November - Returns home from international trip.
  • Early December, 1964 - Malcolm briefly travels to London for a debate, leaving his family behind amidst alleged death threats.
  • Feb. 14, 1965 (early morning) - The Nation's New York residence is suspiciously firebombed before Malcolm's eviction can be enforced. Malcolm accuses the Nation of Islam.
  • February 14, 1965 - Malcolm speaks in Detroit.
  • February 14, 1965 - Betty smirks during interview about the burning of the Nation's New York residence.
  • February 17, 1965 - Article: Detectives find gasoline on a "baby dresser".
  • February 20, 1965 - Article: Malcolm denies bombing the Nation of Islam's New York residence.
  • February 21, 1965 - Malcolm is killed before a speech in Harlem.
  • February 23, 1965 - The Nation of Islam's Harlem mosque (Temple #7) is firebombed by Malcolm's supporters.

We are constantly working to add new issues, and upload better versions of the issues already listed. Please check back frequently. If you have any Muhammad Speaks newspapers or copies you'd like to donate, please contact us. Muhammad Speaks newspapers have become quite expensive (up to $100 or more in some cases) over the past decade. Many non-believers have created a disgraceful racket to profit from our (the believers) disunity and disorganization. Together, we can make all issues available for public research. Please consider helping us preserve our history.
